Material Metamorphosis
Material Metamorphosis
My mixed-media textiles practice is guided by my interest in process, forming concepts through exploring materials and redefining their boundaries. A consistent inspiration of mine is nature, reflected in my curiosity to learn techniques to recreate natural patterns and textures. I enjoy experimenting with fabric manipulation, often unpredictable due to my use of collected/ second-hand materials. Sustainability is a core part of my practice, regularly influencing my material choices, which has had a butterfly effect (or moth in this case) on my creative process.
This project navigates costume-making through intricate techniques, finding balance between detail and scaling up. The moth wings evolved through felting, crochet, knitting, tambour beading and handmaking wooden beads. Loose threads were left in reference to Atropos- ‘Cutter of the Thread of Life’ (the third Fate), as moths are known to symbolise death. I transformed second-hand materials, such as spinning bin bags to yarn, exploring change within the textiles - an echo of metamorphosis.
